Established by King David in 1000 BC, Jerusalem is the site of Solomon's first temple. Romans destroyed the temple, leaving only the Western Wall, which is the holiest of all Jewish monuments. In 632, Moslems conquered the city and built their important monument, the Dome of the Rock. We ride up the Mount of Olives, which is part of the range of mountains that surrounds the city. From there we can see stunning views of the city, encompassing the Dome of the Rock, Church of the Holy Sepulcer, and the Hass Promenade. Below us on the side of the mountain is the oldest and largest Jewish cemetery in the world. This is the place were (history says) Jesus awaited his arrest.
