Sitka

Sitka is the ancestral home of the Tlingit Indian people. In the 1800's the town was also Russia's major Pacific port. This was before Alaska was sold to the U.S. in 1867 for $7,200,000. in gold. Until 1906 Sitka was the capital of Alaska. It is located on Baranof Island.

 

To the left above is the outside of the Russian Orthodox Church. To the right are decorative gold doors on the inside of the church.

 

Above is a view of Sitka. To the left is an interesting old building in the town.

One of the places we visited was the Bald Eagle Raptor Center, at right. Volunteers rescue the eagles, rehabilitate them and release them back into the wild if possible.
