Juneau

Juneau was born in October 1880 when gold was discovered. It is located between Mt. Juneau and Mt. Roberts on the shore of the Gastineau Channel. The Klingit indian tribe hunted and fished in this area for centuries. It became the capitol of Alaska in 1959 when Alaska became a state.

The spectacular Mendenhall Glacier is nearby. A huge moving body of ice.

An outdoor salmon bake is held for the tourists. They cook the salmon over an Alderwood fire. They also served ribs, chicken, potato salad, etc. We also roasted marshmallows over a campfire.

This old mining equipment was near the salmon bake and an old goldmine, which is shown at right.

An old prospector (wooden) waving at the tourists. He's the one on the right.

This is Juneau from a tram going up the side of Mt. Roberts. This mountain is where $80 million of gold was mined. It has 300 miles of tunnels inside, mostly vertical.

View away from town on the tramride.

Stories from Alaska:

An airplane once hit a salmon as it was being dropped by an Eagle.

Bears go into the supermarkets via the automatic doors and help themselves to the salad bar.

An eagle swooped down and flew off with a small dog (chihuahua).
