Skagway

Skagway is a very small town of about 800 residents, with a lot of rugged scenery. We took the White Pass Summit Scenic Railway up in the mountains. This is a narrow gauge railway which has been used for over 100 years. The area really makes you feel like you're on top of the world. Nothing but snow-covered mountains and tree filled valleys.

Above left is the train approaching a tunnel. Above middle is a log cabin almost hidden by the snow. (This is mid-May.) On the right is the old tressel bridge, which was built in 1898. It is decaying now, and is not used. Below is a photo of it being built. As you can see the conditions were not the best! Enlarge these to see details.
