Melk, Austria

Melk has been an important spiritual and cultural center in Austria for over 1000 years. There are many Baroque buildings, many of which have been restored in recent years. The Stift Melk is one of Europe's great cultural heritage sites. It started out as the residence of the ruling Babenberg family, and became a Benedictine monastery in 1089. Monks have continually lived and worked here and are very active in the community and run a school with 750 students. The interior is beautiful and elaborate, with many museum type displays. Below is a model of this huge complex.
